Six months ago, Justin had his 25th birthday. Birthdays are always a big deal to me, but for some reason I figured that 25 was a “big” year… I’m not entirely sure if that is really the case, but hey, I’ll take any excuse for a party. And a quarter of a century? That seems like a great reason to me!
If you know Justin at all, you know that he is a kid at heart. And while I might have grandiose visions of a backyard wonderland with coordinating color scheme and Martha-esque details, I wanted the party to be all about him and what he would enjoy. He is obsessed with the movie ‘Willy Wonka’ and has been ever since he was a kid. He knows all of the songs and can virtually recite the movie by heart. Seriously… we can’t even watch the movie without his off-camera dialog. So I decided to throw a surprise Willy Wonka party.
I think it’s possible that I had more fun planning the party than he had at the party itself, but it was well worth it. I did a lot of DIY projects for the decorations and my roommate from college loaned me her kitchen to secretly bake the cake. You would be surprised how many whimsical party props you can make from supplies found at the Dollar Store! We had the party at my in-laws house and turned their backyard into a Willy Wonka wonderland. It was so fun to see him walk into the backyard, expecting a pre-Labor Day cook out with his parents to find 50 people waiting for him! Needless to say he was definitely surprised! It was a great way to ring in the second quarter century <3.
I was too busy being the hostess with the mostest, so all of the pictures you see here were taken by the talented Shannah Phillips.
(These giant bon-bons were made using punch balls and cellophane.)
(The cake was so fun to make! We made our own marshmallow fondant and colored the inside of the cake using gel food coloring. I follow the directions I found here, but you could make whatever pattern you wanted! I used my own cake recipe so that I could make the cake dense enough to stand up to the fondant. ) 
(The mushrooms are dollar store umbrellas covered in red plastic tablecloths!)
